REGION 5

By: Sara Barnwell — Region 5 Director

Happy 2025, Region 5!  If you are like me, you are probably working on winter homework, planning for the upcoming year, and appreciating technology that allows all of us to stay connected.  There is a lot being planned for 2025 across the region – licensed shows, clinics, schooling shows, and our Championship show in October!

I wanted to share a special feature this month, from one of our youth members.  Annaliese Rowe has been participating in Working Equitation since 2019 and is currently competing at Level 4.  She has become well-known across the region (and beyond) for being a kind horsewoman and a wonderful friend!  Annaliese was the 2024 Level 4 Youth Champion at the Eastern Zone show in Tennessee.  Annaliese is graduating high school this year and wrote the following essay as part of the college application process.  While I think it captures what many of us feel about this community, I think it is especially lovely to see this from the perspective of one of our youth members.

My involvement in a unique discipline of the equestrian sport has shown me where I belong and given me an irreplaceable “horse family”. These are people who have come together from many states, many experience levels, and many stages of life to a USA Working Equitation horse show to compete not against each other but together. This group has taught me not only the patience and dedication needed to be successful with horses, but also how the unique personalities of those around you can shape who you are and how every person can teach you something. They have taught me how to stand up for myself and speak up for what I know is right; how to support others and create a loving community; that “life is good”; and to look at the positive. I have learned that while it is important to juggle family and work/school, there is still plenty of time for fun. Each and every person is there to not only compete but to support each other in their shared goal to better their performance and horsemanship. I am very fortunate to be able to say that these people are my friends and honorary family.

This community has taught me so much about life and given me the support I’ve needed to succeed in it, in addition to strengthening my relationship with horses. This group has created a very positive and fun show atmosphere. Whether we are celebrating amazing rides and high scores or helping someone through a tough ride, the atmosphere is always one of encouragement and camaraderie. This sense of belonging, where the focus is on collective growth and friendship, has truly shaped who I am and where I feel most at home.

Region 5 Friends – I hope you all can see yourself in what Annaliese shared.  We are all collectively responsible for this wonderful atmosphere for each other AND for the next generation.  Thank you to Annaliese and her mom, Shannon, for sharing this!  As always, please reach out if you want to connect:  r5director@usawe.org
