July 2025 R2 News

Glynna Hoekstra – R2 Director

Summertime is here and the show schedule is in full swing!  Here are just a few upcoming shows.  Can’t ride?  Volunteering is a great way to get and stay involved in this terrific community.  Contact the Show Managers, we can always use more hands on deck to put these shows on.

  • July 19 & 20, WCC Farmyard Follies Shows, Murrieta, CA
  • August 1 & 2, WCC Udderly Amazing WE Shows, Valley Center, CA
  • August 10, Coconino Cool Off Show, Flagstaff, AZ
  • August 30 & 31, WCC The Heroes Show, TBD, CA
  • September 13 & 14, BAWE Equinox #1 and #2 Shows, Santa Cruz, CA

Make plans now to attend the Region 2 Championship Show and WAWE Qualifier show in Temecula, CA, October 10-12.  This is sure to be another spectacular show for all levels of riders.  If you are looking for some inspiration, there will be Masters level riders from across the country working for a spot on the US Team that will travel to Spain in 2026 to compete on the world stage!

Give it some thought – how can you, our most valuable, persuasive and passionate spokespeople, help get the word out?  Your Board, Committees, Professional Instructors and Licensed Officials are here to help, just let us know how.

Thanks for your time.  Wishing you all happy rides and beautiful weather as we roll through Spring and get ready for Summer.

Along the international lines, Region 2 members Robin Bond and Susan Watkins will be competing at the WAWE Concurso Internacional, July 25-27 in Cali, Columbia.  Join me in cheering for them on this wonderful adventure!

It’s encouraging to see more shows offering the Cattle Trial, as this is the foundation of our sport.  I encourage you to attend a clinic and participate in the trial when it’s offered.  Working cattle is one of the most fun things you can do with your horse!

On a final note, this post from Utah member Alicia Crandall sums up the very best part of Working Equitation – the people!

“What is really cool about WE is that it challenges you to grow in both horsemanship and resilience.  At almost 80, I am learning a lot in both areas.  I got into it to be a better rider for my horse.  I have found that facing challenges together has improved our trust in each other.  Ending up more often at the bottom than the top has not been easy, as I am highly competitive.  BUT, the people involved in this sport are friendly and genuine.  They and the challenge to get better keep bringing me back.”  Alicia Crandall, WE Member, Region 2 Utah

AZ Working Equitation Club representing at Prescott Fourth of July Parade – Arizona

Every Fourth of July Prescott, Arizona holds a rodeo that is considered “The World’s Oldest Rodeo”.  On July 5, 2025,  the Arizona Working Equitation Club, had 13 members and 2 volunteers represent the spirit of the Working Equitation Community by riding in the parade.

The parade had over 100 entries and our club was entry #70. In the lead was a truck pulling a trailer with a big AZWEC banner and in the back of the truck was the bull and garrocha. Riders carried custom AZWEC flags, the American and Arizona flags.

Our entry piqued a lot of interest in the Working Equitation sport. Many people asked us to explain what it is. The judges commented on our “beautiful” and “well behaved” horses, just as all good working horses should behave.

We hope to make this an annual event for our club and to attend other parades throughout the state to promote the sport of Working Equitation.
